MORGARTEN (Book 2 of The Forest Knights Duology)
This action-packed conclusion to The Forest Knights series picks up where ALTDORF left off.
A small force of peasants from the forest regions surrounding Lake Lucerne, rise up against their Austrian overlords in the 14th century. Outnumbered seven-to-one by the battle-hardened Habsburg army, they have little hope.
A daring moonlight raid leaves the outlaw Noll Melchthal in possession of an Austrian fortress.
In the north, an outraged Leopold of Habsburg assembles the ultimate punitive force: a great army, thousands strong, boasting the best knights and soldiers the Holy Roman Empire has to offer. Noll’s rebel army of boys and old men, numbering less than a thousand, have few swords, and even less armor.
But he has two things that Leopold does not: a Priestess of the Weave, and a ferryman.
The forests can protect them no longer. It is time to make a stand.
MORGARTEN is a novel of 77,000 words.

Thanks very much for reading Altdorf Michael. I’m a big fan of writers like David Gemmell, whose stories tend to be more action-oriented rather than descriptive. Other great authors that I like are Sara Douglass, Bernard Cornwell, and Joe Abercrombie, just to name a few!
I’m currently working on the 2nd draft of Morgarten (I usually do about 4 before showing it to an editor) so be sure to subscribe to this site for updates and pre-release specials. In the meantime you may want to have a look at my Keepers of Kwellevonne series of short stories.
Thank you for taking the time to comment!

Well, you made my day Derick! Thanks for reading Altdorf. I’m working away on Morgarten and it looks like it will be a little longer than the first book. If you get a chance to copy and paste your comment to Altdorf’s Amazon page here I would greatly appreciate it, and it will help me write faster as well

Just finished Altdorf. Once I got to the half way mark, I couldn’t put it down. Of course, when it ended, I felt a void. Want to read more. I can’t wait for Morgarten. Fantastic story!!

Friend of mine got me a Kindle from the UK. Was a bit sceptical in signing up to Amazon
HOWEVER …….
Just read Altdorf. Took a while to get into the book, but could hardly put is down once I got going.
Enjoyed the historic setting. Maybe you can expand a bit on it.
Look forward to the second book.
Kind Regards

Great to hear from someone in South Africa! Thanks very much for reading and commenting Johan. I’ve always been a fan of the medieval setting for films and books, and when I started studying Swiss history I knew I had to base a novel on its fight for independence. It really is one of history’s great underdog stories.
All the best,
JK

Thanks very much for commenting Michael. I too will miss Pirmin. In fact, that is one of the main reasons I started writing a story about the Schwyzers’ younger years (a prequel series). But first things first–have to get Morgarten finished up!

I am very impressed with your book, and cannot wait for another
You touched all the bases that i enjoy, rich characters, well meshed into the “historical” landscape of the story….enough historical accuracy to be impressive but not bog down the story like some history text. The grit and the vulnerability of the “heroes”, the touch of the mystical and the occasional odd or quirky scene such as the old lady at the ferry, not only made it seem real but is a small touch i find missing in many stories and only generally found in King novels or non-fiction. The combat scenes seemed dangerous and real while full of exciting detail and action without being over the top…..i could ramble on but i wont lol. I will end by saying that i have been looking for a good series of historical fiction like this and not since “The Walking Drum” or some of Lawheads works have i been so satisfied…please keep up the great work. May your talents and reknown soar to greater fame and may your next work i pick up be as entertaining and as educational.

Wow–thanks very much for all the kind words Darrell. I hope I don’t let you down in the second book! As you can probably tell, I too love books that have gritty heroes and a touch of the mystical, and I think that is why I am drawn to the medieval ages as a setting. Along with the hardships, there must have been a certain “magic” to life in those days. After I finish with Morgarten, I have another series outlined which will follow the adventures of a mercenary company of Swiss Pikemen–I’m excited to start that one! Thank you very much for taking a chance on Altdorf.
